Richmond Chapter News
The Richmond Chapter had another successful event with their annual Pinkus-Schwartz Symposium in collaboration with the VCU School of Social Work. This program was designed for social workers and their community partners. The presenter was Emily Brown, M.S.W., LCSW, the director of the Key Bridge Therapy and Mediation Center in Arlington, Va., and is a member of the Greater Washington Society of Clinical Social Workers. Her presentation concerned affairs and they are not really about sex, but are symptomatic of deeper issues that haven’t been addressed. She believes that for clinicians, the challenge is in helping clients shift from the devastation of the affair into using this experience as a catalyst for resolving “old baggage” and developing the promise and possibilities in their lives. This workshop identified the motivations behind the different types of affairs, focusing on strategies for helping clients resolve their underlying issues, and warns of the traps that lie for the unwary clinician. Issues addressed included the hidden affair, the betrayed spouse’s obsessive anger, rebuilding trust and eventual forgiveness.
