Richmond Chapter News
The Richmond chapter has continued its monthly education programs with a presentation in January by Reese Harris, LCSW on “Surviving and Thriving as a Clinical Social Worker” and in February by Dr. Pam Kovacs on “Lessons Learned from Oncology and Hospice Work.” Our March meeting was a “brainstorming” meeting on where we are as a chapter and how we might improve our programs. Several potential education programs were discussed as were ways in which we could increase our membership. One concrete result of this processing was a plan to be present at the VCU School of Social Work Job Fair which is held every year for upcoming graduates. Our chapter plans to be present and offer networking opportunities and membership benefits to joining the Society. Kim Flournoy and Junie Myers will be present and represent the Society at this program.

Our primary focus recently has been on the upcoming Pinkus-Schwartz Symposium which will be held on Friday, April 24, 2009 at the VCU Student Commons. The program is being jointly presented by the Richmond chapter and by the VCU School of Social Work Continuing Education department. The presenter this year is Dr. Ken Hardy who will speak on “Therapy with Oppressed Families.” Dr. Hardy is a well know speaker who has presented at the Networker Symposium on several occasions. He is a dynamic and challenging presenter who relates with a unique, transparent style. Much effort has been expended on preparing for the Symposium and collaboration with the state Clinical Society conference has made this a potentially exciting weekend for clinical social work on both a professional and a social level. This is an exciting time of the year for the Richmond chapter as the Pinkus-Schwartz Symposium generates interest and enthusiasm and represents what the Society has been focused on for years.

We have continued with our Mentorship program for new professionals and one of our members, Dr. Jonathan Lebolt, is offering a group supervision experience for the chapter membership. We continue to have new members join and this has included both new professionals and experienced clinicians from the community. For information on membership and program opportunities contact Dr. Henry Morris.
