Roanoke Chapter
4/26/2008 9:58:18 AM Roanoke Chapter News We are excited about our late winter and spring offerings here in the beautiful Roanoke Valley. On February 12th, Dr. Sydney Brodeur McDonald, presented “Searching for the Blind Spot: Eating Disorder Assessment and Treatment” at Hollins University. This was a co-sponsored event with VSCSW, Hollins, Carilion, and the Blue Ridge Academy of Clinical Psychologists. Over 70 mental health practitioners gathered to hear Dr. McDonald discuss working with this high-risk population.
On March 19th, we welcomed two MSW students, Tracy L. Brakas and Kay Montgomery, from Radford University who presented their latest research. This is the second time we have had the privilege of learning from those students who are at the cutting edge of our profession. In turn for presenting to us, we offered them a reduced rate to join VSCSW as new professionals as they leave graduate school and become social workers in our midst!
As our luncheon series continued, we heard from Dr. Michael Chiglinsky on April 16th when he presented about mood disorders, particularly Bipolar Disorder, in children and adolescents. And our final offering is planned for May 21st when we will welcome our own June Allder, LCSW as she assists us in learning about working with a challenging population, patients who self-harm.
Our membership continues to grow and we look forward to meeting not only clinical social workers at our breakfasts, luncheons, and seminars, but other mental health providers in our area who come to our excellent events!
